The Virginia Museum of Natural History recently held its 7th Annual Mixed Captain's Choice Golf Tournament at Westlake Golf & Country Club at Smith Mountain Lake, in Hardy, Virginia, with 24 teams of four competing for a chance to win the grand prize of a weekend vacation with golf at the Homestead Virginia Resort & Spa. The tournament, one of the museum's largest fundraising events of the year, raised over $12,000, which benefits the museum's Discovery Fund in support of the museum's scientific research, exhibits, and education programs.

Nearly 200 people descended upon Martinsville and Henry County for the 2012 Virginia Master Naturalist Statewide Volunteer Conference and Training hosted at the Virginia Museum of Natural History September 7-9. The annual conference also took place at New College Institute and Fairystone State Park, allowing volunteers of all 29 Master Naturalist chapters throughout the Commonwealth to participate in high-quality advanced training sessions and learn about the unique natural qualities of the southwestern Virginia piedmont.

The Virginia Museum of Natural History celebrated the completion of the $4 million phase of its "Make a Lasting Impression" capital campaign on Monday, September 10 at the museum. This event included a "note-burning," celebrating the pay-off of the loan for the museum's new state-of-the-art exhibits. Attendees included some of the museum's largest contributors along with representatives from the VMNH Foundation Board, the VMNH Board of Trustees, and the museum's staff.
