The Hooker Furniture Discovery Reef will be closed today through Monday, October 3 for maintenance. The Reef will re-open to visitors on Tuesday, October 4. All other exhibits will remain open, including "Living off the Land," the "Fossil Overlook," "Documenting Diversity," the "Hahn Hall of Biodiversity," and much more.

The Virginia Museum of Natural History recently announced its fall 2011 schedule of Field Trips. VMNH Field Trips are conducted throughout the year, and include trips to a variety of locations throughout Virginia and the region. Fossils and other scientific specimens collected during the Field Trips are vital to the museum and its mission of studying and interpreting Virginia's natural history. Those interested in joining VMNH scientists on Field Trips can choose from several locations and trip durations, from half-day events to expeditions involving overnight stays.

Cruise on in to the VMNH Chili Cook-off on Saturday, October 15 at the museum. For the first time ever, the VMNH Chili Cook-off will be held in conjunction with the Martinsville Cruise-In. VMNH partnering with local organizations, volunteers for September 17 park cleanup ---- Every September and October, volunteers across Virginia from the mountains to the oceans gather along the shorelines of rivers, lakes, ponds and bays to pick up trash as part of the Virginia Waterways Cleanup Day and the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup. On September 17 from 10 a.m. to noon, Virginia Museum of Natural History staff members will partner with local organizations and volunteers for a J. Frank Wilson Memorial Park Cleanup and greening event. A tavern in Petersburg served as an important meeting venue for America's founding fathers and later British officers during the American Revolution, but it is the food eaten by those guests that interests Dr. Elizabeth Moore, curator of archaeology at the Virginia Museum of Natural History in Martinsville. In the 18th century, taverns were among the few public places where people (primarily men) could gather to discuss the issues of the day.
