VMNH staff are working to remove fossils from an active mining site in Southern Virginia that is also one of the most significant fossil insect sites in the world. Over the years, thousands of fossils from the Triassic period (250 to 200 million years ago) have been found at the site. Specimens found include reptiles, insects, and freshwater fish, plants and insects.

The Virginia Museum of Natural History and the City of Waynesboro, in partnership with the Center for Coldwaters Restoration, recently announced that they have successfully raised $50,000 to fund the development of a master plan for a proposed VMNH natural science interpretive facility in Downtown Waynesboro. The announcement was made during a press conference at Waynesboro City Hall.
