Lecture with Michael Keigwin (Invitation Only)

The Virginia Museum of Natural History and Blue Ridge Aquaculture are hosting a by-invitation-only reception and lecture featuring Michael Keigwin, Founding Trustee of the Uganda Conservation Foundation on the evening of Thursday, September 13, 2022 from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

About the Presenter

Recovering some of Africa’s finest National Parks has been at the core of Michael Keigwin's work. Having founded the Uganda Conservation Foundation over two decades ago, Keigwinhas worked closely with Uganda's government to ensure the successful recovery of parks, wildlife and local communities.

In conjunction with the militaries of the United States and United Kingdom, Keigwin has played a leading role in training Uganda's wildlife rangers to help improve anti-poaching efforts. Additionally, Keigwin has played a leading role in helping to improve the monitoring and protection efforts of the country's wildlife, such as elephants, lions and giraffes. Although not a scientist by trade, Keigwin has also been involved in many scientific papers, including a study identifying hybridization between savanna and forest elephants in Africa.

Largely known for his work in Murchison Falls National Park (where The African Queen was filmed), Keigwin's work also spans the Kidepo Valley on the southern Sudanese-Kenya border and Queen Elizabeth National Park on the Democratic Republic of Congo border.

In 2017, Keigwin was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) by the Queen for services to conservation in Uganda and he has been a core reason why wildlife numbers have boomed and the country's tourism has increased.

Previously, Keigwin was a strategy consultant with Deloitte in London. He has an MBA with Distinction from Durham University in the UK and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
