Collections Manager
(Role Title: Laboratory and Research Manager)

Location: Martinsville, VA
Salary Range: Pay Band 5

An exceptional job opportunity with the Virginia Museum of Natural History is now available.  The mission of the Virginia Museum of Natural History is to interpret Virginia’s natural heritage within a global context in ways that are relevant to all the citizens of the Commonwealth. 

The Virginia Museum of Natural History is the official state repository of natural history specimens; current holdings include a total of several million specimens representing a wide range of disciplines and storage requirements:  vertebrate and invertebrate biology (wet and dry), geology, invertebrate and vertebrate paleontology, and anthropology.

As Collections Manager, you will be responsible for day-to-day management of the collections; overseeing environmental monitoring and pest management; catalog data entry/editing; and the supervision of the Registrar, the Librarian, and volunteer staff.

The position requires the ability to catalog a wide variety of natural history materials; experience in collections care and maintenance; attention to detail and accuracy; excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent project management skills; and demonstrated proficiency with database software and Microsoft Office programs.  Knowledge of collections software including Re:Discovery and Specify would be an advantage. 

A degree in biological or geological sciences and a Master’s degree in Museum Studies is preferred.

The Collections Manager will be heavily involved in assisting with the move of the collections to the new building.  The move is expected to take a minimum of two (2) years to accomplish.

Part-Time Sleepover & Birthday Party Coordinator (Hourly Wage)
(Role Title:  Education Support Specialist I)

Location:  Martinsville, VA
Starting Pay:  $12.50-$15.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience
Salary Range:  Pay Band 2
Hours:  15-20 hours per month with opportunities for growth

The Virginia Museum of Natural History is seeking a Sleepover and Birthday Party Coordinator to expand these areas of museum programming.  Duties include:  working with the Director of Education and Public Programs in coordination with other museum staff to design and implement highly effective museum sleepovers and birthday parties for various audiences; planning, organizing, coordinating, providing programming for, and evaluating sleepovers and parties; coordinating program staff, volunteers, and program participants; and overseeing program set-up and clean-up.

Qualifications include:  strong teaching or science background; experience with programming for children or adolescents in an instructional or supervisory manner; strong interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities.  Preferred qualifications include:  degree or college/graduate student in education, natural science or related field; customer service experience; experience managing programs or events; and certification in First Aid/CPR.

The starting pay range is $12.50-$15.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.  Hours will vary, but currently average 15-20 hours per month with opportunities for growth.  The successful candidate must be available days, nights, and weekends throughout the school year and in the summer.

The successful applicant will have a high school diploma or equivalent.  Experience as a cashier or in retail sales.  Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.

Part-Time Barista/Coffee Bar Attendant (Hourly Wage)
(Role Title: Food Service Technician I)

The Virginia Museum of Natural History is seeking a Part-Time Barista (Hourly Wage) to work in the Paleo Cafe, making and serving coffee and other specialty drinks to the public in a friendly, energetic manner.  Position includes training in the operation of an espresso machine and other equipment.  Position also requires the serving of food items including pastries, cakes, and other items.  Some food preparation will also be required.   Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.

The successful applicant will have a high school diploma or equivalent.  Previous customer service experience and food service experience preferred.
